1. Doctor: 

Present the diagnosis to the patient. Explain what the condition involves. 

Answer:

  1. What type of symptoms will the child display? 

  2. What type of treatment options are there? 

  3. What will be the quality of life for the child?

  4. Which chromosome is affected by this disorder?
  5. How is the chromosome of a healthy person different from that of an affected person?
  6. Find a picture of the chromosome that is affected by disorder.
  7. write an action plan for your patient's daily living (precautions, what to watch, how to treat symptoms, diet, exercise, etc.)

2. Genetic Counselor:

Your role as the genetic counselor is to research  the human genome project.  Find out what it is and  how it works and how it can help.

Discuss the  social and moral implications of genetic testing with the family.

Answer:

  1. what is the role of a genetic counselor?

  2. How is genetic testing currently used in the medical field?

  3. Is genetic testing available for your patient's disorder?

  4. What are some pros and cons of genetic testing?

  5. What is gene therapy?

  6. What is the possibility of gene therapy helping your patient?  

  7. Create a recommendation sheet for your patient's family:  What are the chances of the parents of the child having another child with this disorder? What are the chances of the patient passing the gene or having a child with the disorder? Do you recommend genetic testing for family members?  Why or why not?

3. Genetic Scientist:

Create a pedigree using the family members mentioned and at least eight other members.  The pedigree must be realistic, meaning it must show how the person got the disease.

Answer:

  1. Draw a family tree with at least eight family members.  Invent the members that are not mentioned in the case history.  You may use Inspiration to draw the family tree.
  2. Use colors and shapes to indicate a carrier or infected person.
  3. Write a case history for each family member.  (sample)
