Devora is 17 years old and is a freshman in high school.  She is 5’ 11”, long and lanky, and a great basketball player.  She has  always had trouble shopping for shoes. She and wears contact lenses to correct for myopia (nearsightedness).  Her father is 6’ 7” wears glasses and has partial lens dislocation.   Her mother is 5’ 7” and has no health complaints.  Her grandfather on her father’s side was 6’ 4” tall.  He had a problem with his aorta and died at the age of 48.

Group 2:

David began life as a healthy, happy baby.  Around his six month birthday, though, his growth seemed to slow down.  He also began to sleep more and was less active than other babies.  His mother also noticed that he had difficulty catching his breath.  As he grew older, he began to complain that his joints and bones hurt and the doctor noted that he had an unusually high heartbeat.  Neither of his parents have any health problems, but his grandmother on his father’s side was frequently hospitalized for infections and painful blood clots.

group 3:

Michael is 12 years old and has no history of health problems.  Recently, though, he had to have a tooth extracted.   While in the dentist’s chair, the dentist became worried about the excessive amount of blood Michael was losing and immediately had an ambulance take him to a hospital.  Neither of Michael’s parents have any health problems, but Michael has a three-year old brother, Nathan that bruises very easily.  Michael’s grandfather died of severe blood loss due to an accident when he was in his late 30’s.

Group 4:

Sarah is an adorable baby girl who just turned four months old.  She is the only blond child in her family.  For the first three months of life she developed normally and seemed healthy.  Recently, though, she began to seem more withdrawn and has lost interest in playing with her parents.  Her parents were concerned and brought her to the doctor.  After a blood test was performed, Sarah was put on a special formula.  She continues to have weekly blood tests, but overall her health has improved.  Sara must eat on a regular schedule, otherwise she becomes unfocused and irritable
